Sweet Potato Pie Kids
The Sweet Potato Pie Kids (SPPK) bring together young YAM musicians who are ready to take what they have learned in lessons and experience the excitement of making music as a band.

SPPK gives middle school students the opportunity to grow through rehearsals, performances, and time spent making music with friends. Along the way, they learn one of the most important parts of traditional music: how to listen, play together, support one another, and have a whole lot of fun doing it.
From Lessons to the Stage.
There is something special that happens when a young musician moves from practicing an instrument to becoming part of a band. SPPK students build confidence, strengthen their musical skills, and learn how their individual part contributes to the sound of the whole group.
Performances give them the chance to put those skills into action in front of real audiences at festivals, community events, and YAM celebrations throughout the region.
Sharing the YAM Story.
The Sweet Potato Pie Kids are also some of YAM’s youngest musical ambassadors. When they perform, audiences get to see our mission in action: young people actively learning and enjoying the old-time and bluegrass traditions of the Southern Appalachians.
SPPK helps students discover that this music isn’t simply something from the past. It belongs to them, too.
They aren’t just learning the music. They’re becoming part of the tradition.
