If you play guitar, mandolin, fiddle, or banjo and enjoy sharing your love of traditional music with others, we'd love to find a place for you. You don't have to be a professional teacher to make a difference at YAM.

Help Keep the Music Alive

Whether you've been playing for years or simply love sharing traditional music with others, you can make a lasting impact at YAM. Our instructors help students discover the joy of Appalachian music while building confidence, creativity, and connections that last a lifetime.

 

Teaching experience isn't required. We'll help you find opportunities that match your skills, interests, and availability. Whether you can teach one afternoon a week, lead an evening class, support a summer camp, or lend your expertise to more advanced musicians, there's a place for you at YAM.

Guitar

Help students build the foundation that gets them playing and enjoying music. Our guitar instructors work with beginners learning their first chords as well as advancing players developing rhythm, flatpicking, lead playing, and confidence playing with others.

You bring your love of playing and guitar skills and we'll bring students ready to learn, program support and a community of fellow musicians.

Banjo

There's nothing quite like the sound of a banjo, and we're always looking for musicians who can help the next generation discover it. Banjo instructors can work with beginners on the fundamentals or help advancing students strengthen technique, timing, rolls, backup, lead playing, and their ability to play with a group.

You don't have to be a professional teacher to make a difference. If you know your way around a banjo and enjoy encouraging others, we'll help you become a confident YAM instructor.

Mandolin

From first chords and simple melodies to rhythm, lead playing, and improvisation, mandolin instructors help students discover the unique role this instrument plays in Appalachian and bluegrass music.

You don't need a formal teaching background. If you know your way around a mandolin and can help someone else learn what you know, we can help you get started.

Fiddle

Help carry one of Appalachia's most recognizable musical traditions forward. Fiddle instructors may work with complete beginners learning how to hold the instrument and produce their first notes or with experienced students developing tunes, technique, timing, and playing by ear.

We're looking for musicians who enjoy encouraging learners and passing along the music in the same way it has been shared for generations: musician to musician.

Every YAM instructor's journey looks a little different. With programs serving a variety of ages, skill levels, locations, and schedules, you can teach regularly or lend your talents through camps, workshops, special programs, or advanced instruction.
